The Legal & Documentation Division at the University of Kelaniya provides essential support in managing legal matters and ensuring compliance with regulations and policies. This division handles documentation related to contracts, agreements, and intellectual property, safeguarding the university's legal interests. Additionally, it offers guidance on legal issues and assists in resolving disputes to promote a fair and ethical academic environment.
Key Services
Court Representation: Appearing in various courts, including Magistrate Court, District Court, High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court, on behalf of the university to advocate for its legal interests.
Representation in Inquiries: Representing the university at inquiries conducted by the Human Rights Commission, Labour Department, Ombudsman, and the University Statutes Appeals Board (USAB) to address any legal issues.
Legal Opinions and Observations: Submitting observations and providing legal opinions on various issues referred by the administration, ensuring informed decision-making on legal matters.
Disciplinary Inquiries: Conducting disciplinary inquiries pertaining to students, coordinating with appointed Inquiry Officers to ensure fair and just processes.
Documentation Management: Maintaining comprehensive documentation regarding all litigation matters and inquiries related to the university, ensuring accurate record-keeping and accessibility.
Council Memos: Preparing memos for the university council regarding litigation matters, documenting actions taken, and following up based on council decisions.
Document Preparation and File Management: Preparing necessary legal documents, handling and maintaining files, and participating in consultations with the Attorney General’s Department and legal representatives.
Collaboration with Legal Counsel: Providing necessary details and support to external legal counsel and the unofficial bar in defending the university, fostering cooperation to address legal challenges effectively.
